The search for the remains of the space shuttle Challenger and its crew, the largest salvage operation in history, ended officially after NASA determined that no other debris was essential to the investigation into the Jan. 28 explosion. The $100-million operation off Cape Canaveral has recovered 245,000 pounds of wreckage, representing 45% of the shuttle.
