El Segundo used its hitting, and Jensen Beach, Fla., relied on its pitching to score first-round victories in the American Legion youth baseball World Series at Rapid City, S.D. El Segundo had 16 hits and two five-run innings in beating Lake Charles, La., 16-5. El Segundo will play Jensen Beach, a 9-2 winner over New London, Conn., in the second round of the double-elimination tournament.
Willie Parsons had four hits for El Segundo (38-7). Zak Shinall pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits. For Jensen Beach (48-12), Joe Grahe struck out 18 and allowed only two hits in eight innings. Grahe’s 18 strikeouts were one short of the tournament record.
