Firefighters were battling a brush fire in a rugged area of Los Padres National Forest about five miles north of Santa Paula. The fire was ignited when a plane practicing aerobatics crashed. About 300 acres of brushland was reported burning. The pilot, Michael Jarvis, 24, of Camarillo, was taken to the Sherman Oaks Burn Center with second- and third-degree burns and a broken arm and leg. Student pilot Julie Clarkson, 33, of Culver City, who was in the plane, was treated for cuts and bruises.
