Deukmejian’s Stand on Prison in East L.A.
Gov. Deukmejian distorts the truth when he asserts “that Mayor Tom Bradley was totally silent and of no assistance when the search for a prison site was going on.”
As a matter of fact, Mayor Bradley strongly recommended the Saugus area as a possible site, but strong objections were voiced by County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, a political ally of the governor.
Why do Deukmejian and Antonovich object to Acton, Palmdale and Lancaster and the surrounding desert, which is uninhabited for miles around? The acquisition land costs would save the state thousands of dollars.
The governor is trying to stampede the Legislature into selecting the East Los Angeles site without a proper environmental impact study and a closer look at alternative sites suggested.
