Dana Hills High School rallied from an early 7-0 deficit Friday night to defeat Trabuco Hills, 17-14, in a nonleague game at Dana Hills High.
Trabuco Hills, in its first year of varsity football, scored on the first play of the game--a hook-and-lateral play covering 80 yards--to take a 7-0 lead.
On the play, Jeff Dooley caught a five-yard pass from Brett Miller, then pitched back to tailback Ray Walters, who ran 75 yards down the sideline.
Dana Hills (2-0) scored 14 points in the second quarter and a field goal at the end of the third quarter to take a 17-7 lead, but Trabuco Hills (1-1) wasn’t finished. The Mustangs closed to within 17-14 on a 76-yard touchdown pass-play from Miller to Dooley. Miller threw a short pass to Dooley, who escaped a tackle and then broke loose behind a block from wide receiver Danny Galbraith.
Trabuco Hills reached the Dolphin 48-yard line with 2:26 to play, but two dropped passes, a holding penalty and an overthrown pass ended the threat.
The Dana Hills defense scored a big touchdown that gave the Dolphins a 14-7 lead. Linebacker Billy Mitchell returned an intercepted pass for the score.
Dana Hills tight end Bob Wyant had scored three plays before on a four-yard pass from Jason Hickman to tie the game at 7-7.
Jay Hollis’ 39-yard field goal gave Dana Hills a 17-7 lead.
