POW Protesters Invade Regan’s Yard

MOUNT VERNON, Va. — Five women were arrested Sunday after they erected a bamboo prisoner-of-war cell on White House Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan’s back lawn. The demonstrators accused Regan of thwarting efforts to find U.S. servicemen who may still be captives in Southeast Asia.

The women entered Regan’s yard through an open gate and locked themselves inside the bamboo cell, according to Warren Carmichael of the Fairfax County police.

The demonstrators told police they belonged to a group called the Bamboo Connection. They were charged with unlawful entry and released on their own recognizance on the condition that they stay away from Regan’s property. Regan and his family were not at home at the time, police said.
