Jamaica Christian Fund Sues Over Being Denied $50,000 by 2 Charities

A group that claims it was promised $50,000 from the USA for Africa and the Hands Across America campaigns but later was turned down filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against both groups Wednesday.

The Jamaica Christian Fund and its executive director, Ernesto Montgomery, contend that they were told they would get $25,000 from each campaign. But the money was “improperly withheld,” they claim, charging that the groups allegedly promising the money never intended to hand it over.

The suit seeks the funds and unspecified punitive damages.

Joyce Deep, a spokeswoman for USA for Africa and Hands Across America, said the Jamaican fund was never promised any money. She said the group submitted a proposal but failed to qualify.

Two weeks ago, Montgomery charged that the two groups had unfairly denied his group support last fall and had misappropriated $40 million in community and corporate donations. He called for a grand jury investigation, claiming that his group was discriminated against because he is black.
