4 Protesters Arrested at Nuclear Test Site

LAS VEGAS — Four anti-nuclear protesters were arrested Monday inside the Nevada Test Site, where they were hiking in an effort to stop an underground nuclear test reportedly scheduled for Thursday, the Department of Energy said.
The four, two men and two women who were not identified, were picked up after a surveillance helicopter spotted them, said DOE spokesman Jim Boyer. He said they would be charged with trespassing “at the least.”
Anti-nuclear protesters said Monday that several people would infiltrate the site and as many as 1,000 demonstrators will protest the test Thursday morning.
The Soviet Union has announced that it will no longer observe an 18-month unilateral test moratorium once the United States conducts its first test of 1987.
