The Coast Guard announced the closing of its district offices in Alameda and New York City in a move Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole said is aimed at assigning more people to duties such as search and rescue and pursuit of drug smugglers. Dole said the district offices will be replaced by new maintenance and logistics commands, and would allow a switch to operations assignments of more than 500 people now occupied on shore assignments. No relocation of operating units, such as boats and aircraft, is planned.
