Long Beach : School Site Purchase OKd

The school district has approved the $4.6-million purchase of the Southern California Military Academy in Signal Hill as the site for a new 600-student elementary school.
Meanwhile, the City of Signal Hill, which has been critical of the purchase, filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court asking that the district be required to file an environmental impact report on the impending takeover.
The district has maintained that an environmental report is not required because a school already exists at the site.
According to Stephen Garcia, assistant business manager, the district expects to spend an estimated $4.5 million beyond the initial purchase price to raze the existing buildings and build the elementary school. Both the purchase and construction funds, he said, are expected to come from the state. Garcia said the district hopes to begin construction in 12 to 18 months and have the new school completed within three years.
