The State : State Moves on Smoking

Citing the incidence of cancer and heart disease among smokers, Gov. George Deukmejian issued an executive order requiring all state agencies and departments to study the possibility of banning smoking in work areas of state buildings and to immediately devise plans to set aside as large a smoke-free area as possible. The governor also ordered all state departments to offer stop-smoking programs and provide “on-going encouragement” for state employees to remain nonsmokers.
