College Basketball Roundup : Illinois Keeps Michigan at Bay, 89-75

Illinois had a big lead, and Coach Lou Henson was concerned.

But the 12th-ranked Illini, who squandered double-figure leads in losses to Iowa and Purdue, held on Wednesday night for an 89-75 Big Ten victory over Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich.

“We told them, ‘Whatever you do, don’t get too conservative,’ ” Henson said. “We certainly weren’t trying to kill the clock.”

Illinois (22-7 overall, 12-5 in the Big Ten) made 65% of its shots while limiting the Wolverines (18-11, 9-8) to 40.5%.

Purdue 69 Michigan State 59--Todd Mitchell scored 20 points, and Melvin McCants added 18 as the third-ranked Boilermakers held first place in the Big Ten by beating the Spartans at East Lansing, Mich.

Troy Lewis hit a three-point shot to give Purdue (24-3, 15-2) a 60-55 lead with 2:31 left.

Wichita State 79, Tulsa 74--Gary Cundiff and Sasha Radunovich each made two free throws in the final 30 seconds of overtime as the Shockers upset the regular-season champion Hurricane at Tulsa, Okla., to win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

The Shockers (22-10) earned an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament, while Tulsa (22-7) must hope for an at-large berth.

Tulsa’s David Moss had 36 points.

Ohio State 106, Florida International 70--Dennis Hopson scored 36 points to become the Buckeyes’ all-time leading scorer in a rout of the Sunblazers at Columbus, Ohio.

Hopson raised his four-year career total to 2,019 points, surpassing Herb Williams’ record of 2,011.
