COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Gutierrez Outpitches Mead as Cerritos Wins
- Share via
Karen Mead might be wondering whether last season was a dream or if this one is a nightmare.
Mead, an All-Western State Conference pitcher last season, threw a four-hitter for Moorpark (6-5) on Wednesday, striking out 11 and walking two.
Unfortunately for Mead and Moorpark, Cerritos’ Estela Gutierrez also struck out 11 and walked two, the major difference being that Gutierrez’s teammates got her the one run she needed to win the nonconference game, 1-0, at Cerritos.
With one out in the first, Cerritos’ Audra Jesolva singled and teammate Jennifer Merino reached first on an error by third baseman Heidi Leal, Jesolva taking third. Vandy Wilkerson then singled, scoring Jesolva.
Last week, both teams played in the Cypress Invitational tournament. Moorpark placed fourth in the 16-team field. Cerritos, though, finished second, perhaps a sign of things to come.
BASEBALL
Fresno State took advantage of three errors and scored six runs on two hits in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead and went on to beat Cal State Northridge, 12-6, in a nonconference game at Fresno. Northridge (10-6) committed five errors. CSUN’s Craig Burns drove in two runs in the second inning with his third home run of the season. Steve Bates drove in three runs for Fresno State (10-6). . . . Freshman David Hallisey went 4 for 5 with two doubles and his first collegiate homer as Cal Lutheran demolished Christ College, 20-6, Wednesday in a nonconference game in Irvine. Hallisey drove in three runs. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Cal Lutheran (3-6). Mike Kuzmuk went 4 for 5, including a double, with 5 RBIs for the Kingsmen.
SOFTBALL
