Maywood : Housing Site to Be Acquired
The Maywood City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, Tuesday night cleared the way for building a housing project for senior citizens and the handicapped. The agency voted unanimously to acquire by eminent domain the site occupied by Roy’s Liquor at 4650 E. Slauson Ave.
Ron Lindsey, city director of planning and development, said it is a good location for the project because it is within walking distance of stores, the post office, city library and other services.
The Redevelopment Agency voted to acquire the land after hearing protests from several residents who said it would be dangerous for senior citizens to frequently cross heavily traveled Slauson Avenue and that the area is too noisy.
The 55-unit housing project is to be underwritten by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the site must receive final approval from that agency.
