A 7-year-old girl died Sunday after she was struck by a van while crossing a street near downtown San Diego, the San Diego County coroner’s office reported.
Carla Berlenga of San Diego was pronounced dead at 12:13 p.m. at Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she was taken after the 11 a.m. accident, Coroner’s Deputy Everett Mauger said.
Berlenga was crossing 25th Street at its intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Way when she was hit by the van, which was turning onto southbound 25th Street. The vehicle’s driver, Roosevelt Calmee of San Diego, was arrested and booked into the County Jail downtown on suspicion of drunk driving.
A police spokesman said an investigation will determine whether Calmee, 52, will face charges in connection with the girl’s death.
