Carter Hawley Hale Stores postponed the record date for determining shareholder eligibility to vote on the company’s proposed restructuring at its annual meeting; it is now July 23, and the meeting is expected to be held by the end of August . . . Maxicare Health Plans and Blue Cross of Northeast Pennsylvania announced that they have signed a letter of intent for Blue Cross to purchase Maxicare’s Northeast Pennsylvania HMO operations . . . The merger of Security Pacific Corp., Los Angeles, and Seattle-based Rainier Bancorp. was approved by shareholders of both companies . . . Consolidated Rail (Conrail), headquartered in Philadelphia, and Chicago-based Santa Fe Southern Pacific said they will begin faster freight train service between northern New Jersey and California on July 30, cutting 14 hours from the current 90-hour trip . . . Vistakon Inc., a unit of Johnson & Johnson based in Jacksonville, Fla., will test-market disposable contact lenses beginning this week . . .
