Union Pacific earned $143 million in the second quarter, compared to a loss of $835 million a year ago. The New York-based company credited strong showings in its railroad and natural resources businesses. The year-ago loss included a special after-tax restructuring charge of $945 million. Railroad earnings were up 1%, the company said, and earnings from oil exploration and production nearly tripled. The real estate unit’s earnings doubled as a result of three large West Coast sales.
