Top Paraguay Party Picks New Leader

ASUNCION, Paraguay — A new, strongly authoritarian leadership took control of Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner’s Colorado Party on Saturday at a national convention that split the party into rival factions.
Interior Minister Sabino Montanaro, 65, won the party presidency at the head of the militant wing, formed by staunch supporters of Stroessner.
But Montanaro’s victory was challenged by members of the traditionalist wing, who walked out of the convention.
