Al Unser Jr. shot past Darrell Waltrip on the last lap and won the third round of the International Race of Champions at Brooklyn, Mich.
Unser, locked in a racelong battle with Waltrip at the front of the all-star 12-car field, also had to fight off a bid by series point leader Geoff Bodine with five laps remaining in the 50-lap, 100-mile event on the 2-mile, high-banked oval at Michigan International Speedway.
Unser, an Indy car driver and the defending IROC champion, surprised three-time Winston Cup champion Waltrip with an outside move that began in the third turn of the final lap.
Bodine, a NASCAR driver, was third, followed by road racers Wally Dallenbach Jr. and Scott Pruett, Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser, LeMans winner Derek Bell of England, Indy car stars Mario Andretti and Bobby Rahal, stock car star Bill Elliott, Indy car racer Michael Andretti and stock car point leader Dale Earnhardt.
Unser, who averaged 155.63 m.p.h., trails Bodine in points, 50-48, going into the final race of the four-event series next Saturday on the road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
The series winner will take home a check for $175,000 from the total purse of $635,000.
