An early-morning fire in a vacant home in the 3100 block of Broadway caused $40,000 in damage Monday, the San Diego Fire Department reported.
Firefighters responded to the alarm at 5:44 a.m. When they arrived, “The smoke was visible for miles. Flames were leaping 50 to 60 feet into the air,” Fire Department spokesman Larry Cooke said.
The fire threatened an occupied home next door, but it was brought under control in about half an hour, Cooke said.
The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating, Cooke said.
