The heat wave blamed for 80 deaths chased people from golf courses and kept power plants straining for a 17th day in the eastern two-thirds of the nation. Heat and high humidity pushed back into parts of the Northeast after about a week’s respite, with New York City hitting 90. A heat alert warning residents to take it easy was extended to today in Alabama. Record highs included 102 at Paducah, Ky., 84 at Marquette, Mich., 89 at Alpena, Mich., and 91 at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on the Canadian border between lakes Superior and Huron.
