Walter B. Gerken, chairman of Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Newport Beach, will serve as a special professor next year with the UC Irvine Graduate School of Management.
The UC Board of Regents has appointed Gerken a “Regents’ Professor” for the 1987-88 academic year, UCI officials announced.
Such appointments are “designed to bring distinguished persons from non-academic fields to campuses to interact with students and faculty,” UCI spokeswoman Cynthia L. Morris said.
Gerken will be involved in several UCI activities during his year. He will deliver a public lecture on corporate responsibility during the fall quarter, and in the winter quarter he will join with Henry McMillan, a UCI assistant professor of administration, in teaching a course about pension plans and other investments.
Gerken, who has been with Pacific Mutual for 20 years and was chairman the last 11, will retire Sept. 1 but will remain as a consultant with the firm.
