A suspected pipe bomb near the center divider of Friars Road stalled traffic in Mission Valley Monday morning but turned out to contain no explosives.
The eight-inch pipe with two end caps was found near Friars Road and California Highway 163 about 10 a.m. and reported to police by a passing motorist, said Fire Department spokeswoman Ida Cheney.
A police officer notified the Fire Department, which dispatched its Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team to the scene.
Members of the special unit removed the object, placed it in a trailer and transported it to an abandoned quarry nearby, Cheney said.
A hole made in the object showed it contained no explosive material.
