The holding company that owns Ansett Airlines of Australia has purchased 3.03 million newly issued shares of Phoenix-based America West, the 10th-largest U.S. airline. The shares, worth $31.8 million, will be held by Ansett Airlines. Together with a previous investment, Ansett’s holdings will total 20% of America West. Ansett has agreed not to exceed that percentage, according to Michael J. Conroy, America West’s president.
