Continental Airlines was sued by Safeway Stores in Oregon, Washington and Oklahoma for ending a promotional program offering discounts on airline tickets to shoppers. Continental had already been sued by a Boston savings and loan for the same reason. The Safeway suit, filed in Seattle, seeks both damages and a court order to make the tickets available again. Continental spokesman Bruce Hicks said the airline was “trying to wind down” the program--in which about 40 supermarket and thrift firms sold discounted Continental tickets--and had asked participating companies not to advertise it anymore.
