Downey : Expense Stipends Increased

The Downey City Council has tentatively approved increases in its monthly expense stipends to keep pace with increases in the cost of living.

The ordinance would increase the monthly expense reimbursement for the mayor from $390 to $430. Council members would receive $365, up from $330. The ordinance was introduced for its first reading Tuesday and is to be considered for final approval on Aug. 25. If passed then, it would take effect 30 days later.

The monthly expense payments were last increased in 1984. Since that time, the local Consumer Price Index has risen 10.68%, according to Lee Powell, director of administrative services. The ordinance would automatically increase the monthly stipends in the future to match increases in the cost of living.
