Strong Typhoon Hits Central Philippines

Associated Press

The strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines in three years struck the main island of Luzon on Wednesday, lashing several central provinces with heavy rain and winds up to 135 m.p.h., officials said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Officials issued typhoon warnings over most of Luzon and the central Visayas islands. They said winds would be felt in areas up to 125 miles from the typhoon’s center.

Typhoon Betty is the most powerful to hit the country since Typhoon Ike, which leveled Surigao on Mindanao Island and killed hundreds of people in 1984. It also had winds of up to about 135 m.p.h.
