Calif. Death Sentence Upheld

SAN FRANCISCO — The state Supreme Court today unanimously upheld the death sentence of David Ghent, 39, for the 1978 rape and murder of a Santa Clara County woman.
It is the first death sentence affirmed by the new court, which gained a conservative majority after Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird and two colleagues were defeated last November in a campaign that focused on the court’s frequent reversals of death sentences.
