Ex-Deputy Gets 4 Years for Crimes

A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy convicted of felony conspiracy and bribery charges was sentenced Friday to four years in state prison.
Wayne Desire, 29, was sentenced by Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Sam Bubrick on charges arising from a November, 1985, off-duty incident in which he and his West Hollywood station partner, Scott Graham, solicited and accepted a $500 bribe from a motorist in lieu of making a drug arrest.
Besides conspiracy and bribery, Desire was convicted last June of possession of a controlled substance, possession of metal knuckles and compounding a felony. He was acquitted of charges stemming from a second incident, in which the two deputies allegedly took illegal drugs from a motorist and divided the evidence between themselves.
According to a pre-sentencing probation report, Desire, who made several admissions to police after his arrest, now maintains that he was innocent and that it was Graham alone who committed crimes.
Graham pleaded guilty last December to conspiracy and was sentenced to a two-year prison term.
