Pan Pacific Swimming Championships : Evans and Wharton Both Win Their Second Gold Medals

BRISBANE, Australia — Janet Evans and David Wharton won their second gold medals of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships Saturday night as the U.S. team took seven of eight events.

Evans defeated Australian Julie McDonald by .86 of a second in the 400-meter freestyle.

Wharton, who broke the 400-meter individual medley world record Friday, beat 200-meter individual medley record-holder Alex Baumann of Canada by one-hundredth of a second. Wharton was timed in 2 minutes 2.49 seconds.

With world record-holder Tracey Wickham watching, Evans, 15, was .70 of a second under the world-record pace after 200 meters. She tired in the second half and finished in 4:09.32, which was 3.04 seconds slower than Wickham’s nine-year-old record time.

The U.S. men’s and women’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay teams also won gold medals. The U.S. women were timed in 3:43.90, the men in 3:18.94.

Dan Veatch won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:01.38, .18 of a second ahead of Canada’s Mark Tewksbury. Matt Cetlinski won the 400-meter freestyle in 3:49.51.
