Klaus Klein of West Germany was killed when he crashed his Yamaha in heavy rain at the start of the Ulster motorcycle Grand Prix road race at Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Klein, 33, was in fifth place when he skidded and struck a grass bank at the start of Lap 2 on the Dundrod track near Antrim.
The race was then postponed after the leading 10 riders refused to ride on the wet track.
