Louie Espinoza knocked out challenger Mike Ayala in the ninth round at San Antonio to retain his World Boxing Assn. junior-featherweight title.
Espinoza (43-1), of Phoenix, was leading on all cards when the knockout came 37 seconds into the round.
Ayala (44-6), fighting in his hometown, has lost all three of his title shots in an eight-year career.
