U.S. Troops, Jets on Maneuvers in Peru

LIMA, Peru — Six U.S. fighter planes and 450 American soldiers are taking part in two weeks of joint field maneuvers with Peruvian troops, the first such exercises since 1983, the military announced Tuesday.
The exercises come amid uneasiness in Washington over President Alan Garcia’s opposition to U.S. policy toward Central America and his recent proposal to nationalize private banks in Peru.
