Monitor

Thomas H. Maugh II, in his article on shipwrecks (Part I, Aug. 10) says that second to the Titanic, the sunken ship best-known to Americans is the Monitor.
If it is so well known, why does Maugh state that the Monitor fought for the Confederate forces when it actually fought on the Union side against the Confederate ironclad Merrimac?
Perhaps the ship and its history are not as well known as Maugh thinks.
