Arvidas Sabonis, the star center of the Soviet national basketball team, underwent emergency surgery after falling down a flight of stairs and rupturing his Achilles’ tendon for the second time in two months, Tass said.
The official Soviet news agency hinted that the career of the 22-year-old, 7-foot 2-inch center has been seriously threatened. Tass also accused the 264-pound Sabonis of carelessness.
