The death in London of a 350-pound professional wrestler who was thrown to the mat has stunned officials of a sport more noted for its entertainment value than aggression and prompted calls for tighter controls.
The British government’s health and safety department announced that it would investigate the death of Malcom Kirk, 51, who performed in the super-heavyweight division as King Kong Kirk, and who died of a heart attack Sunday night.
Kirk died while being taken to a hospital after he had been injured in a bout in which 336-pound Shirley Crabtree, also known as Big Daddy, dived on him.
The British Medical Assn., representing a majority of the nation’s doctors, called for an age limit to be imposed on professional wrestlers.
