Garden Grove : 8 Candidates File in Mayoral Election
- Share via
Eight candidates, including three current City Council members and a former mayor, have filed to run in November’s special election to replace former Mayor Jonathan H. Cannon, who resigned to become a municipal court judge.
The winner in the Nov. 3 election will serve Cannon’s unexpired term, which ends in November, 1988.
Mayor Pro Tem Milton Krieger and council members Walter Donovan and Robert Dinsen had turned in their documents by Friday’s filing deadline.
The election became necessary when the current four-member City Council was unable to select a replacement for Cannon, who was appointed in July by Gov. George Deukmejian to a seat on the West Orange County Municipal Court in Westminster.
J. Tilman Williams, a former mayor who left the City Council in 1984, also announced his intention to run. Businesswoman Karen Moreland, who finished second to Cannon, also will run.
Also in the running are John Modaffari, a businessman who has served on the city’s Planning Commission for the last eight years; Malcolm Fisher, a businessman, and Steven Childress.
Should one of the present council members be elected mayor in November, the city must hold another election in April to fill the unexpired council seat.
