The NCAA placed Marist College’s basketball program on two years’ probation for recruiting violations involving foreign students.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions said the basketball team will be ineligible for postseason competition for two years and the school will be limited to two, instead of the usual three, full-time basketball coaches in off-campus recruiting activities. Marist is a Division I-A team.

Marist, in a statement released in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., said the penalties were “grossly excessive and without precedent in light of the fact that the college self-disclosed many of the violations.” The college said its attorneys are considering an appeal, which must be filed in 15 days.

The violations involved extra benefits given several foreign athletes after their enrollment. The NCAA cited the college’s effort to gain a competitive advantage by illegal out-of-season basketball practice. The NCAA also said the school deliberately provided misinformation to NCAA investigators.
