Kurt Schmoke, 37, a prosecutor and Rhodes scholar, narrowly won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Baltimore, defeating Mayor Clarence (Du) Burns, 69. Complete but unofficial returns showed Schmoke with 78,550 votes and Burns with 73,508. Burns became the city’s first black mayor last January when then-Mayor William Donald Schaefer was inaugurated governor of Maryland. The general election will be held Nov. 3, but victory in the Democratic primary is tantamount to election in Baltimore.
