Newport Beach : 2 Rape Victims Falter on Identity; Man Free

A transient suspected in sexual assaults on girls in Newport Beach and Irvine was released Tuesday night from jail after the district attorney’s office decided there was insufficient evidence to file charges.
The two girls could not offer sufficient identification of the suspect to prove his guilt in court, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Marvin Stern, who reviewed the case.
Lloyd Jean Murphy, 38, had been held in the Newport Beach jail on $25,000 bail since his arrest Saturday night in Irvine.
Newport Beach police spokesman Greg Armstrong said, “We’re holding the case open and have no other suspects.”
Murphy was suspected of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Irvine girl at knifepoint on Oct. 22 in her bedroom as her family slept. He was also a suspect in the assault on a 10-year-old girl in her Newport Beach home Oct. 20.
