The World : Israeli Aid to S. Africa Told

South African warplanes supporting rebels in operations over Angola are using Israeli-developed electronic anti-missile systems to defend against Soviet-made missiles, the London Sunday Telegraph reported. The report, quoting senior South African military sources, said Israel also has helped South Africa convert a Boeing airliner into an airborne electronic control center to direct air strikes in Angola. In the last five weeks, South African forces have destroyed four Soviet-built missile launchers in southern Angola while losing one Mirage fighter to a Soviet missile, the newspaper said. The report said that in return for the anti-missile equipment, Israel has received a long-range artillery weapon developed by South Africa.
