President Francesco Cossiga, moving swiftly to resolve Italy’s political crisis after his prime minister’s resignation, opened consultations with senior statesmen and parliamentary leaders. Cossiga, 59, met with three former presidents, Giuseppe Saragat, Giovanni Leoni and Sandro Pertini, to discuss Giovanni Goria’s resignation Saturday in a dispute over economic policy. Goria, meanwhile, met with the leadership of his Christian Democrat party to map out strategy for the formation of what commentators say is likely to be a four-party coalition government. Political experts expect Cossiga, by today or Tuesday, to give Goria a mandate to form a new government.
