Anti-nuclear groups from 21 Pacific countries and territories met in Manila and pledged to fight a foreign military presence that they said is transforming their region from an island paradise into a battle zone. Delegates at the fifth such anti-nuclear conference called on Pacific-area governments to declare the region nuclear-free. They said they have taken their lead from New Zealand, which in 1985 banned visits by U.S. nuclear warships. The delegates also called for the dismantling of foreign military bases, including America’s biggest overseas facilities, Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines.
