A man police believe to be the “Westside Counter Jumper,” responsible for 18 bank robberies, was in custody today.
William Smith, 29, was arrested last night along with his wife, Bonita, 30, as they were driving away from Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles Police Lt. Bruce Mayer said. In the crime rampage, the robber targeted Westside banks located along the San Diego Freeway. “The suspect would usually enter the bank, gun in hand, and vault the teller counter, terrorizing bank employees and customers,” Mayer said.
