About 40 film industry figures appealed Tuesday to the Pinochet government of Chile to protect Chilean actors and prosecute those responsible for making threats on the artists’ lives. Mary Steenburgen, speaking on behalf of the actors, directors and writers who attended a Los Angeles news conference, said the brief respite Chilean actors received after Christopher Reeve attended a rally Nov. 30 in Santiago was followed by intimidation and threats attributed to the government’s clandestine Comando 135 Cultural Section. Among the actors attending the news conference were Ed Asner, Daryl Hannah, Rae Dawn Chong and Jeff Goldblum. John Healy, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said about 80 Chilean actors, writers, directors and theater workers have been threatened since Nov. 1.
