Mark Baldassare, whose Irvine-based public opinion research firm conducted the telephone survey on the slow-growth movement for The Times, is a 36-year-old UC Irvine professor of urban sociology.
Baldassare, who earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley, joined the UCI faculty in 1981 and founded his own private polling company three years later. The company conducts UC Irvine’s Orange County Annual Survey of attitudes and trends.
In addition to The Times, the company also conducts opinion surveys for the San Francisco Chronicle, Newsday and Time Inc., parent company of Time magazine.
Working with Baldassare is his associate, Cheryl Katz, 32, a former newspaper reporter specializing in demographics.
Baldassare’s firm will conduct a number of polls for the Orange County Edition of The Times that will focus on political, business and current-event issues.
