American Dan Jansen won the 500 meters...

American Dan Jansen won the 500 meters for the second straight day and survived a sixth-place finish in the final 1,000-meter event to win the World Sprint Speed Skating championships at Milwaukee.

Jansen won three of four races in the two-day competition at the Wisconsin Olympic Ice Rink, just a few miles from his West Allis, Wis., home. For Jansen and many of the other skaters, the races were a tuneup for the Calgary Olympics that start next weekend.

Jansen had 155.975 points in the four-race competition. East Germany’s Uew-Jens Mey was second with 156.695 points and American Eric Flaim third with 157.065.

East German world record-holder Christa Rothenburger was beaten by American Bonnie Blair in a head-to-head showdown at 500 meters, but still won the women’s title by less than a point over teammate Karin Kania.

Kania, defending sprint champion, set a track record in the 1,000 meters of 1:21.81, and Rothenburger finished second at 1,000 meters to clinch the title. Blair held the previous track record of 1:22.20.

In a rare head-to-head matchup at 500 meters, Blair overtook Rothenburger on the final turn and won in 41.03 seconds. Rothenburger, who holds the world record of 39.39, was second in 41.33.
