The Planning Commission voted Monday to approve a $90-million commercial development that would include construction of three large office towers along the San Diego Freeway.
The commission voted 3 to 2 to approve the Arnel Development Company’s Metro Pointe project, which now will go to the City Council for final approval.
The project proposal calls for three office towers to be built on 12 acres of farmland bordered by South Coast Drive, Bear Street and the freeway. It would include 4-story, 6-story and 12-story structures totaling 460,000 square feet. A four-level parking structure as well as a six-level facility also are proposed.
The proposal drew strong opposition from neighborhood residents who contended that the project would cause further problems to the area’s already unstable water table and result in an increase in noise and traffic in the area.
