Amdahl Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. said they will jointly develop a system to link Sun’s technical workstations and Amdahl’s mainframe computers. The agreement was seen as an opportunity for both Silicon Valley companies to expand into market territories dominated by rival IBM. The deal gives Amdahl access to the technical and scientific markets served by Sun, while Sun wins the ability to serve customers needing the power of large mainframe computers.
