Anaheim Stalls on Billboards Again
The Anaheim City Council has again put off consideration of a new billboard ordinance amid a continued dispute over a provision that would allow billboards along some freeways in the city.
The council on Tuesday appeared to be no closer to a compromise on billboards but will consider a new ordinance again in a week.
If approved, the ordinance would place much tighter restrictions on the numbers and locations of future billboards and would provide an increase in revenues from ad firms. At the same time, it would lift the city’s 20-year prohibition on building new freeway billboards.
Despite voting down requests to change the city’s legal position three times in the last three years, several council members indicated they would now support lifting the ban if advertisers had to pay higher business license fess.
The opposing argument has been to raise fees and impose other regulations but maintain the ban on new freeway billboard construction.
